i'm trying to test this but none of the renovate/ branches are appearing on my local clone after fetch using the https remote. the ssh remote works!

Do you see the the approve button now? I created a forgejo-maintainers team and added both of us. I also added branch protection to maintain.

Automatically adding us as reviewers for renovate seems like a nice idea, there might be an option for it.

nope, i can merge it, though it's a red button warning there're not enough approvals

The approve button is a little bit hidden. You need to click in files changed, then review and then you should see the review button
