What happens

A member whose default payment method at Stripe is a SEPA Direct Debit mandate presses Switch on a higher tier, confirms, and reads "We couldn't complete that change. Try again in a moment." Trying again fails the same way. The upgrade asks Stripe to apply the new price only once its invoice is paid (payment_behavior=pending_if_incomplete), and Stripe refuses that setting for this payment method: "You cannot set payment_behavior to pending_if_incomplete when the default payment method is sepa_debit." The console's Checkout does not restrict payment methods, so any deployment that turns on SEPA Direct Debit in Stripe can have members in this state.

What should happen

Either the upgrade works with a payment method that settles days later, or the tier's card says before the confirmation why it cannot. The fix decides which.

A member paying by bank debit cannot move up a tier at all, and the message tells them to retry something that cannot succeed.
