When I did

# add user to docker group
sudo usermod -aG docker $USER

# setup swarm
docker swarm init

following this

I had to logout/login after usermod. It may be obvious for some but it wasn't for me, so it could be worth adding that (perhaps just as a comment in the script snippet)
