The question

Every product carries a display category. It is the residue of an earlier column whose behavioural meaning was dissolved into the catalog's conferral rules; what is left is a value the code carries in dozens of places and the surfaces render as one badge. Should a product have a category at all, and if so what reads it?

What depends on the answer

The product create and edit forms, which ask for it; the badge that shows it; and every code path that carries the value. If it goes, the forms lose a field and the catalog's vocabulary loses a word an operator has to learn for nothing.

Options known so far

Drop it: the column, the form field and the badge go together.
Keep it as the grouping the member catalog's sections are built from, and make the surfaces group by it instead of only printing it.
Keep it as a label with no behaviour, and say so where it is asked for.

The catalog model states whether a product has a category and what reads it, and the forms and surfaces match.
